I have a 1999 Dodge Dakota 5.2L V8. It is the only vehicle I have ever owned that does not have a clear reservoir for the engine coolant level. How do I know if it low or not?

Open it and look in. It should be between 1/2 and 3/4 full. If it is not than you can just add water to the reservoir, but you may want to look into draining, flushing, and re-filing your sysytem.

You are going to have to pull the caps off and look. But don't do it with the engine hot. Wait until the engine cools down. Best time is before you start in the morning or after you get off work so it the engine will be cold.

If it gets low, the control module responsible for that function will throw a light on your dash. Keep an eye on your temp gauge, if it goes a little higher than usual, you could try adding some. It has an overflow, so adding too much is not that much of an issue(unless you have a dog or cat)

check owners manual! if u don't have one, look under the hood for the cap that is labeled engine coolant. It is not necessarily the radiator. Also, coolant is 50/50 antifreeze to water, don't use plain water!

Open radiator cap

See if stuff squirts out

If you can see rusty pipes you need more stuff in there.
