San Francisco is close to San Jose - so is Monterrey - go to the acquarium in Monterrey, and eat lunch at Bubba Gumps off Pier 39 - it's pretty good, and the scenery is great. Go to China Town for dinner, and eat in a Chinese resteraunt, it's awesome.
Go back to LA and go to Orange. In Orange, there is a resteraunt in the mountains called "Orange Hill". Vallet parking, nice atmosphere, and after dinner, go out on the patio and sit in front of a firepit and have wine and desert - it's an awesome view.
Go to Newport Beach and just kick around. It's a very nice, artsy little town on the water. During low tide, there are many rock formations on the beach you can climb around on and see octopi and tropical fish trapped in tidepools - it's pretty cool!
I don't know much about San Diego.
In LA, you can go to Hollywood - which is kinda interesting. I like driving the PCH and going to Malibu, turning in on Mullholland drive and driving into Hollywood. It's a nice, twisty, curvy ride.
Have fun - California is great!

California in December, what a treat! Of course, the sunset at the beach can't be missed. San Diego Zoo is the best! If you get a chance, drive up the coast to Carmel by the Sea. That's where Clint Eastwood is mayor, and it's just a beautiful place. Oh, and Laguna Tidepools (in Orange County between LA and San Diego)! Laguna Niguel, Laguan Tidepools, & Corona Del Mar are great for checking out marine life. I'm pretty sure there's still an Oceanography Insitute there, too! If you like California history, you can go check out Mission San Luis Opispo where the swallows used to return every year (but now they all nest in the nearby mall!) Lots to see in California - enjoy your trip!

The beach, the beach, and the beach!!! Even though it is December, there will probably be a few days during your trip where it will be warm enough to visit the beach - even though it will probably be too cold to go in the water. If you go to Huntington Beach (in Orange County), take a walk down the pier, there is a tasty Ruby's diner at the end of it. That should make for a nice afternoon.
There is also Disneyland, which is loads of fun. If I were you I would skip "Disney's California Adventure" - there is really only one roller coaster there and the rest is just a million tourist traps. Six Flags Magic Mountain is even better than Disneyland, but it's in Valencia so it might be a bit of a drive for you. Universal Studios is pretty lame, in my opinion.
Hollywood is fun too, but I'm sorry to say, don't think you're going to meet any celebrities. They're not walking around everywhere like people seem to think. You never know though, you might get lucky!
I must add this too: If you like hamburgers, you MUST ask about the nearest In-N-Out burger and go there. They only serve burgers, fries, sodas and shakes - but they are AMAZING and inexpensive :-) Everyone in California loves them to death. They use only fresh meat and other ingredients - nothing frozen - and you can watch them make the french fries right in front of you, from real whole potatoes! Look up their website if you want to learn more. Seriously, you have to go there.

Go to San Francisco. Check out China Town, walk across the Golden Gate Bridge, walk on Ocean Beach. Maybe if you can do it, drive up hwy. 1 north from San Francisco to Stinson Beach--the road is pretty windy and high on the mtns so if its rainy or windy don't do it.
In San Diego, go to Balboa Park. Go to the beach. A lot of people like Sea World. The Zoo and the Wild Animal Park are excellent. You might find an afternoon in Tijuana fun, but don't bring anything illegal back, and have your proof of citizenship handy.

If you get a chance to do some driving, I HIGHLY recommend taking Highway 1 to/from LA/San Diego to/from the San Francisco area (including San Jose). You will see perhaps the country's most dramatic coastline - it's stunning! Once in the San Francisco area - take a cable car ride! It's worth the wait in line - a must-do for San Francisco. You'll not only get to ride in a real cable car, but you'll see interesting sites and architecture that the city is famous for.

If you enjoy nice drives, California has the best. Hwy 1 up the coast to San Francisco and beyond the Golden Gate Bridge is a good starter.

San Francisco. Napa Valley (Wine country near San Francisco) Carmel. Monterey. Disneyland in Anaheim. Venice Beach (lots of activity there) Santa Cruz. Yosemite National Park. There are plenty of places to see that are cool, I guess it just depends on your interests. If you can make it to South Lake Tahoe that would be a good choice too. Have a fun trip~!
