I have one. It works on how much force a magnet uses. The thicker the paint the less grip. I think u get the idea. Different body panels have different depths of paint. Roof & bonnet have more than doors for instance.

Buy one at any bodyshop supplier.

Take a key and scratch the paint to the bare metal. Then put a tire tread checker into the scratch.

paint is measured in microns, in the same way "aullright" mentioned, each coat can be as little as 40 microns and Rolls Royce's having upto 10 of them
