Socially they were plebians, but belonged to a subset called 'Novi Homines' (New Men). These were what amounted to a middle class in the republic, plebian families that had gained wealth, thus enabling them to enter higher society (but were still considered commoners by the patrician families that dominated the Senate and the upper classes). During their careers they both held the office of Tribune of the Plebians, the most senior position in the Plebian Assembly. Politically they were 'Populares', meaning they sought political power by having the backing of the people rather than the Senate.
