according to differnet schools of thought on dreams it coudl mean any different things.
the most practical way to assess the dream is what is the emotion he was experiencing while dreaming, and was that the same emotion he felt when he woke up?
Then think about when in his recent life has he experienced this same emotion. The dream is most likely related to that.

do you mean bollard-???-i've never seen a bollard small enough to go into an eyesocket---does he work at a wharf or shipyard???
usually the act of a hurt eye means you are looking at a situation a bit one eyed or you have or will see something thats an eye opener--either way the main idea is you are not flexible enough in your thinking--you need to see things from more than one perspective ie:open up your eyes

Well, I'm guessing the bollard represents an authority figure. Someone who has control of things, and is big and strong (either physically or mentally), and he's (subconsciously) afraid that the person is going to take control and hurt him.
Or it could be superficial.

Unfortunately there are not set definitions for dreams, if there was, there would not be a need for counselors/therapists.
Don't worry about the dream, it sounds innocuous enough.

Yes, maybe he is worried about his next step in life. He might feel subconciously that he is not ready for it and that it could blind him, or make him lose his way. Either that or he you poked him in the eye by accident when you were asleep!

go to www.dreammoods.com and click on the dream dictionary. That's where I go when I want a dream interpreted.
