Fishing line will help if it's an indoor tree.. wrap a strand around the star and tack it to the ceiling to help keep the balance correct.

Otherwise i would say, cut away a bit of the top until you have a more sturdy stalk to place the star on..

Good Luck

Well, here is my advice. My problem was that my tree was too big and too skinny. So I cut more off the bottom. this made the top of the tree flimsy. After the star, it was really sad. You should put up the tree and find out where the star will be in relation to the ceiling. You can place a small " I " hook into the ceiling and tie it on to the starusing fishing line or thin yarn matching the color of the walls. This will secure the star on top of the tree. I have had to do it, and it works. Good Luck and Merry Christmas.

You did not mention whether you have a real tree or an artificial tree. If you have an artificial tree, usually there is a metal post at the top of the tree, and some branches around it, bend one of those branches straight up, and then fold it in half, and stuff that in the star as well to keep it standing straight. I am not sure if you have the kind of star that has the “spring” bottom, or if it has more of a cone shaped traditional bottom. If it has a spring like bottom, cover the spring with green floral tape (available at Wal Mart and craft stores near the fake flowers). The green floral tape will disguise the spring, and help the spring “grip” to the branches. If you have the cone shaped traditional bottom on the star, try lining the inside of the cone with a layer or two of paper towels or newsprint type paper, or wad a small ball of paper up and stuff it at the very top of the cone, and then put it on the tree. On an artificial tree, you can also shape surrounding branches by “scrunching” them slightly near the trunk of the tree, so that they can help support the tree topper.

If it is a fake tree you could fold over that top "stick" so its folded down in half and over itself. That makes a firmer base for tree toppers.

If the tree is real I would think you would need to cut some off the top and/or maybe arrange (or even sort of prop) some of the ornaments in a way that the star will kind of be supported on top of the next-down branches or ornaments.

You could also use something like a dowel (painted green if you use a real dowel, available at hardware stores) or some other slim rod-type thing (covered if necessary). Use the rod/dowel as suppport for the "branch" the star needs to be on by tying/wiring the branch to the rod and making sure the rod is long enough to also be tied/fastened to the tree just beneath that highest branch. If you put it on a side of the tree that faces a corner or a wall nobody will see it, especially if you get a super-thin rod that is (or can be made to be) dark in color.

try to use a wire coat hanger for support .. you can undo the coat hanger and wrap it around the center base of the tree and shoot the end strait up or bend it over in half to hold the star if your tree is real thin on top ... cut a limb off the back and place the peices of it into the spaces between the coat hanger thats wrapped around the center base in order to hide not only the coat hanger but the see thru parts of the tree... its easier shown than told lol sorry.

try wrapping the top of the tree with some wire to reinforce it , or snipping a little of the point off the top of the tree and setting the star on. Hope this helps.

The only way to do this is cut your tree back.

clip off the top foot or so and trim the branches so it still looks ok.
