If farmers were on the market they may be honest, but I have yet to see a farmer on a farmers market.

I generally feel quite positive about farmer's markets, and I believe most stands sell locally grown produce and locally produced products. But, anytime there is a crowd and an opportunity to sell, someone is going to try and sell whatever they think they can sell for the most profit.

If it is a good farmer's market, the name and location of the farm is usually displayed somewhere on the stand. If you don't trust the people, move on and take your business elsewhere.

Also, I don't think famer's markets are a 'trend'. I am 40 and have seen them everywhere I have ever lived ever since I was a kid (several different states and cities).

I live in NH and there are several farmers markets available in the growing seasons. The few in my immediate area have products grown from the area farms and are very fresh and reasonable. The idea behind the fm is to help the area farmers stay in business and promote farm(ers). I have yet to see anyone sell items not homemade/produced by their farm. That would be a flea market item(plastics)I also know the going rate for produce in season and have yet to see a major difference in cost. I prefer farm fresh vs store fresh which has usually been 3-4 days before it even hits the shelf.

i think its better to understand where the food comes from, and its better to take the processing out of the food industry. The money goes to the source, and the large food giants have to recognise that people want honest fresh food. It is being proved that fresh ingredients are really not that much more expesive than processed foods....although the fashion at the moment is there to see. It how food used to be bought and consumed, and still is on a daily basis in france.

Fast food and fast living, and made it more relevant to have freezer food, rather than prepared from fresh. We should take a leaf out of the french or italian way of life and enjoy our food, rather than just consuming it!...

Suppose there's good and bad everywhere, but farmers have a hard time, supermarkets put great demands on them, it's great to see a way to get round the big stores and sell direct to ther public.

you miss the point of your own question---we all know chinese plastic crap when we see it----it's the edible produce that the question is relevant to---there will always be a few dishonest people around when it comes to money---but by being interactive with the seller and having a little knowledge about growing etc... it will be easy to weed out the conman

well not really, but to be honest i think most produce would have gone off if they had to go back to bringing everything in by horse and cart again, just think of the hills the man with the barrow would have to climb nowadays, i mean men just arnt that strong willed anymore poor things
