it said that there was a problem with the scanner drivers, I uninstalled
all the software for the machine then re-installed it and it still does the same thing. Is there anything to do to remove any trace of the machine so I can do a fresh install without the recurring problem?. The driver disk is in good shape, was only used once and put in a sleeve and put away immediately ( no scratches or anything ) and it worked fine the first time.

Go to control panel, system, device manager, select your harware from this list, delete but don't reboot your pc yet. Next uninstall the driver. Shut down your pc remove/disconnect the hardware from the pc. Wait a few minutes and redo the installation from the beginning. For usb devices you need to install the device driver first and connect it to the pc only when it's ask you to.
