I just wanted to put this out there, hopefully to get some more varied opinions on the subject. I noticed the other day that, with the exception of the occasional brush-past/up in the subway, I haven't been touched by another human being in almost a year. For the most part I've forgotten what it feels like, and I'm wondering if that's a bad thing. I'm curious to see how many people think physical interaction is actually a necessity of life (no I don't mean just sex, for purposes of procreation to continue the species or recreation) I'm wondering if it's vital to living or not; maybe it's just something we tell ourselves we need.

Touch is extremely important, A hug, a hand shake, a bump or bustle. It is necessary for life as we are human beings and it's just a basic need just as is air, food. We need to have some contact with others not only to interact but to be interacted with. We also need attention....almost a year with no touch at all and you have almost forgotten how that feels? That is sad and it must make you feel sad, lonely? If you were to get out and actually interact ,shake a hand or two , I know you would instantly cheer up and feel really good, at least until you think of the germs that you just contacted, I feel touch is absolutely necessary and it has been proven over the years, The baby study where there were two groups of babies. One group had no physical contact or attention, they were fed and changed but no interaction. The other group was loved, held, talked to , fed and changed and the differences between the two were plain to see that human touch and attention are a necessity for human survival.

Human contact is very vital to your existence. Although, you stated that you haven't been touched in 1-year, you really have. You are "touched" by the voices of the news, the TV, your neighbours, your co- workers, your family and friends, Even that guy you buy your morning paper from. If this were not happening in your daily life, you would be "ostracized" from society and believe me, just sending out this "question" on Yahoo!Answers would have been impossible. You would be a "recluse"!. Yes, Human contact is necessary for a health existence, in any form. Merry Christmas, and start paying attention to the people and the world around you. You can really learn a lot, by just "watching" people.

No, it's not vital to living or people like hermits and shut-ins wouldn't last long.
However humans are designed to want to be around others of their kind and most of us, even the introverts, desire contact with other people on some level.
Intimacy is great, and there are times I crave it...it's definitely one of the major things I miss about being in a (romantic) relationship.

if infants are not touched they will not do well.
(failure to thrive syndrome)
it is needed. necessary. you mean you haven't shook anybody's hand?
hermits can live out a life.
most of us live to get our needs for touch met.
consider a pet. if you have a dog or cat that works pretty well.

I think physical contact is what you make it. I'm touchy feely, I enjoy it. But many people can go a long time with little physical contact with other people.
