Gates said today in an interview in front of Congress that we are neither winning nor losing the war in Iraq.
Bush vehemently said today in a press conference that we are winning in Iraq.
Which one is the realist and which one is the liar?

Nah, Bush agrees with Gates but he will never admit it. It's so painfully obvious.

Golden, you "understood" wrong in that case.

That depends on how one defines "winning the war".... and there is no agreement on it.

Both were right, depending on their definitions. I tend to feel that Gates was more realistic in both definition and knowing that we are not winning or losing. After all... we are still pushing through with some progress.... but far from "winning" as I would define a clear win. At the same time, the insurgents have not pushed us back or out of the country. They've gained no ground either. So.... yeah.... Gates was giving a more accurate picture of the thing.

Best Wishes,

Sue

Actually I think they're both liars but in this specific case, I would say that Gates is the twin with the toni. Bush is in his own little fantasy world where we're winning the war in Iraq, the terrorists are in there last throws, mission accomplished, etc.
The REAL interesting thing is coming up soon with the Baker commission report. I'm betting that he ignores the advice of the commission just as he ignored the advice of the 9-11 commission a few years ago.

I don't think either one is lying. To Bush we are winning as long as we don't quit.To Gates we are neither winning or losing at the moment because we are not the ones doing the fighting we are caught either backing the existing government that is not strong enough to withstand going against Al Sadr or going against the government and alienating the people from the government. It is more of how you look at it short term at the moment or long term to win.

Maybe the choice would be easier if we were all on the same page when it comes to what the bottom line objective was in the first place. WMD's? Depose Saddam? Eradicate Osama? Annihilate terror cells? Establish once and for all that a rock and a hard place are pretty much the same thing??

Obviously, Bush is the liar. Gates' answer is not much better though. We definitely are not "winning".

Oh now honey, you know it is not nice to call people liars like that. At this point Bush still knows more than Gates. Am I gonna have to give you a spanking?

Well, many of his former supporters are stepping up to say that Bush is living in a fantasy. So I vote with them since they have more knowledge of the truth of this situation than I ever will.

A DIFFERENCE OF OPINION DOES NOT NECESSARITY MEAN SOMEONE IS A LIAR. ITS JUST THAT...A DIFFERENCE OF OPINION. GATES DIDNT SAY WE WERE LOSING EITHER. IF LYING IS MAKING MISTAKES OR HAVING IMPERFECT DATA THEN MOST ALL OF US QUALIFY EITHER DAILY OR A LEAST WEEKLY AS BEING LIARS. THE LIST IS LONG ABOUT WMD. LETS SEE NOW. BOTH SIDES OF CONGRESS, THE UNITED NATIONS, PRESIDENT BUSH, THE PM OF GREAT BRITAIN PLUS THEIR INTELLIGENCE DIV, RUSSIA AND THE KGB, GERMANY, FRANCE, AND ISRAEL. ALL REPORTED IRAQ HAD WMD. EITHER THEY WERE THERE OR ALL THESE COUNTRIES ARE LIARS. KINDA HARD TO BELIEVE. THEY MAY HAVE BEEN MISTAKEN (MAYBE). BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN THEY ALL LIED.
