Actually, to the best of my knowledge, neither of these rivers is particularly densely populated.

I think you've answered your own question: the population IN the rivers (ie of fish) is reduced by the pollution.

Fidget - the population of algae and so forth is usually increased by pollution (such as agricultural run-off). Why do only fish have the vote ehhh
