Anytime you see a unit of measure with the word 'per' in front of it, it means that the measure is a ratio, like 'miles per hour.' Five miles per hour is a ratio of 5 to 1 (a car travels 5 miles in 1 hour).

Per square mile' is used the same way. Square miles are often used when describing how many people live in an area - such as: 100 people per square mile. If you laid out a square on the ground, where each side was a mile long, and counted 100 people within the square, there would be 100 people per square mile.

It is the amount of what ever you have in a mile long by a mile wide area. a suggestion is to think of how much grass you would have to cut if you went one mile north of you house and then one mile west then one mile back south and finally one mile east back to your house. The area you have is one mile square. All the grass now has to be cut HAHA
