Toilet paper is definitely a necessity.
Have you ever visited a country, in whose public bathroom lacks that luxurious commodity? Sure, in your own private bath, its just something you use and you don't think twice about it. But take a trip somewhere in which you assume it will be abound by the boat load, sit down (IF there is a toilet) and take a load off. You will then discover there is none, never have been any, and you are stuck with "what you know." There's a bucket and faucet on the side and you get to thinking...and it comes to you.."how am I supposed to dip my butt into that bucket of water..."
Toilet paper is a necessity no matter what! Especially for women. Guys can "shake the lily" but there's no shaking the lily pad.

In this spoiled country it is a Necessity, but in reality it is a luxury. No one will die if they don't have TP. It is just a convenience product, so no one will have to use their hand like in some parts of the world, or corn husks, leaves..... It's a luxury I wouldn't want to do without, but it's hasn't killed me in the past to use a napkin . To those who say it's a necessity......please don't go camping for any extended amount of time.

Umm... somewhere in between. As long as you have "something" to clean your bottom. Some places in Europe use a spiget (or something, I forgot what it's called) that shoots water up...
In India you use your hand and clean it very, very well. (That's why it's such an insult to shake someone's hand with your right hand in India)
I would say that "technically" it's a luxury. However sociologically in our society, it's probably a necessity. Not sure if that makes sense.

WHY is that a question? A necessity! A great big fat MUST! I know after pinching a loaf a nice wipe is in order or there's an ODOR and maybe some crust....

A lot of people find it quite indespensible but in the truest sense it is a luxury. Necessities are food, water, shelter, whatever keeps you alive, basically. You aren't going to die from a little poo clinging to your butt.

Toilet paper is a luxury because for women they don't have to wipe when they pee and when you go #2 you can always use pieces of newspaper.
