I just bought this house and I can't stand to go in the basement.

If the basement just has the usual concrete floor washing it with bleach can help.

A dehumidifier is the thing that's always recommended for basements that have moisture.

Here's something that has been extremely and amazingly effective in a room in a basement I know (and it was discovered by accident): Open boxes of Bounce dryer sheets. One open box will make an area of about 14 x 18 (7 foot ceiling) smell really nice for an amazingly long time. I think the moisture in the basement "activates" the smell. They can turn a basement that would otherwise smell "basement-y" into a really pleasant-smelling room. (Maybe other brands would work as well. I only know that Bounce works.)

Buy a dehumidefer and keep it going all the time and it will get rid of all that mildew as it takes moisture out .
