a good combination of speed and strength and probably most importantly, a good goalie. Also a good group of players with good atitudes who work well together and dont fight or complain about money, playing time, etc.

All good teams have to start in the net. Without good goaltending it doesnt matter how talented the rest of the team is. After that I would rank a teams top 4 defensemen as next important followed by teams with a good combination of speed and forechecking ability ( I dont know that big powerful guys are as important in this new style of NHL but strength is still needed for doing the dirty work around the boards and net). Those are the obvious on the ice things. Off the ice talent wise the ability to respect the rest of your teammates (this doesnt mean getting along, just being respectful- with 24 or 25 different personalities dont believe that everyone will like one another, it just doesnt happen in any job with that many employees.). Of course a good coaching staff and system along with quality organization depth. The other often overlooked aspect of most good teams are the fans. Players can gain energy from a fired up crowd.

Unity. A good hockey team must be made up of players who are willing to sacrifice for the good of the team. Usually, teammates who are close will fight fiercely to protect other team members and will work hard in whatever role they are needed to help the team succeed. Furthermore, teammates that play together well will be more productive on the ice, both on offense and defense, because they know their counterparts well enough to sometimes predict the moves and plays they will make. If you watch the NHL closely, you will see players who have a great knack for knowing where another teammate is (like the Sedin twins in Vancouver or Zubov and Modano in Dallas). No matter how much talent and coaching a team has, it is often difficult to win - especially in the long run or the playoffs - without team unity.

The most important thing on any team is to have good role players and a variety of role players. You need scorers and playmakers, yes, but just as important are the energy guys, the grinders, bangers, and defensive forwards. I'm a forward so I don't really know about D pairings but in my mind your four lines should look like this:
First line: scoring line-this is the line that gets you a goal when you really need it. You need a sniper and a playmaker on this line.
Second line: plus-minus line-this line is the line with the best plus minus. they may not have the flair and scoring talent of the first line, but they are more solid defensively and your most dependable line. you need a defensive forward, a playmaker, and a scorer, but they have to be well-rounded, this line is your multi-purpose players
Third line: grinders-this line is a more physical second line. They should be steady, dependable, and stay in the plus column. They give energy to your team with physical play and hard work.
Fourth line: bangers-these guys are your hitters. They are not going to have the skill of your first and second lines, but when they're out there, you'll know it. If you've got a goon, he's on this line. This line will see less ice than the other three but is a necessary physical presence on every team.

Although good coaching is indeed important. I also believe that a team has to be well connected with each other for example: The Detroit Redwings had an AWESOME team a couple years ago with what they called " The Russian Five" Unstoppable when on the ice together these men moved as 1.

Goaltending, Hockey is the one sport where one player can take over a game and shut another team down. Look what Anehiem did a couple of years ago with Giguere. All stanley cup champion teams have one thing in common they all had great goaltending in the playoffs to win it all.
