The UN is not a branch of the US government. The US is a member state along with about 200 other countries. It's not Bolton's job to "keep the mutts in line". It's his job to represent the interests of the United States to the best of his ability but recognize that anything done by the UN is a collective effort.

Bolton had a long-standing position that the U.S. should get out of the U.N. If the official position of the U.S. is not to leave the U.N., why send as a representative to that body a man who advocates its failure? Do we appoint as ambassador to England someone who hates England?

It wasn't just Democrats who opposed his nomination. Several Republicans did too.

The general reason that people gave for disliking him was that he was too blunt and "pugnacious." Personally, I see that as a strength, not a character flaw, but many people would rather have a less confrontational representative to the U.N. who won't stir the pot.

Because Bolton didn't kowtow to the liberal idea that the USA should limit our actions to those approved of by the rest of the world.

He's a lousy ambassador because he doesn't really want to work with the UN. He is resistant to work with them and doesn't listen to them. Even if you don't agree with the UN, you should try to at least talk with them and work with them, not against them.

Hello,

I am not really sure about that.

But, now that Annan will be leaving the U.N., do you think Bill Clinton will be the next U.N. Secretary? I know he has had his heart set on this for a while now.

Scary if you ask me.................... YIKES!!

Hope this helps you................. : - O

They were not "afraid" of him, they thought he would be a lousy ambassador. They were right.
