"A classic is something that everybody wants to have read and nobody wants to read. "

Mark Twain.

But seriously, it is one of those life changing books that you go back to again and again. As your grow older, you realize more and more truths from the book unfold in reality as you go through more and more experiences. It's also a book that when read again upon older eyes, new truths missed the first time shine through. It also doesn't have to be a book, it can be a movie (Gone With the Wind), a play (Our Town), a painting (The Mona Lisa), ect.

On a societial note, a classic is something that has quite simply withstood the test of time. New generations read it and are influenced by it again and again. The biggest example I can think of is The Oddessy by Homer. It can speak for and influence a generation and many more after that.

Can you think of a song you REALLY love, and have for many years? I'm 21, so I may be a bit older than you. I've liked the song Immortality by Pearl Jam since I was 16. I have gone through so many things in my life and it reminds me of many different things in my life because of all the phases I have gone through since then. When someone else plays it out of the blue, I instantly let out, "Oh my gosh, this is a classic!" It's been with me all these years (and is a 12 year old song) and conveys so many differnent moods and memories and is objectively (from the eyes of unbiased ears) a really good, layered song. You have any songs like that? That is a little bit of what it means to be a classic.

A classic is able to stand the test of time and is able to hold its relevancy in any time period.

A classic is something that cannot be improved upon.

Usually something popular and epic in it's time that people still enjoy to, or are forced to, read throughout future generations.
