It is not necessary to add salt to a freshwater tank. The box of aquarium salt boasts all sorts of miracles performed by salt but it isn't true. In the wild, freshwater fish have NO salt in their water. If you put too much in their water, it messes with their osmotic pressure.
Mollies and swordtails can benefit from some salt in their water (1tbsp / 10 gallons), because they come from brackish (slightly salted) water in the wild. But regular freshwater fish will not benefit from salt. Unless you are treating for a parasite like velvet or Ich.

The type of salt you are looking for is aquarium salt. Some fish prefer different amounts of this salt, and some don't like salt in the tank at all. Before buying the salt, i would do some research on the fish you have, or are going to have in your aquarium. Good luck.

There is a lot of debate concerning the benefits of salt to the freshwater tank. The truth is though, that proper maintenance and care prevent disease, so salt isn't necessary. One fact I can tell you is that I've kept fish for many years without any additives (except dechlorinator) successfully, and I firmly believe that anything you add to the water only complicates matters and increases the chances of something going wrong. Keep it simple.

I have an eighty gallon saltwater aquarium.
If they are tropical fish, then yes use salt. But for a freshwater tank, please don't.
You can get a big bucket of salt that is formulated for tropical tanks. We use stuff called INSTANT-OCEAN.
It should tell you the right amount for how many gallons your tank is.
Don't put just any salt in it, make sure it's for aquariums.
Good, luck, I hope this helped some!

I've heard that certain fish like different amounts of salt added to the water. You should check with whoever you bought your fish from. Or any place that sells fish should know. It depends on what kind of fish you have. I remember they told us to add salt (not table salt) to the tank for our Mollies.

Not regular salt. It is called aquarium salt, and is sold in most pet stores. Direction are on the box. The amount is based on the size of the tank. It helps protect the fish's skin and makes them less susceptible for skin diseases.

The benefits of salt is that they help prevent different diseases in your tank. The bottle will tell you how much to add.
