It doesn't matter at all.
Me, i got engaged in September and my wedding is in February so that makes it 6 months.
But like i said it doesn't matter and it's totally up to you.
It also depends on when you want your wedding to be. If you get engaged during the Winter but you want to wait till next Summer...

You can stay engaged for as long as you want, in fact I know people with kids who still aren't married.
