Ulaanbataar (the double letters signify streched vowels). It means red hero in Mongolian. It is the world's coldest national capital, with temperatures commonly below zero in winter. About 1/3 to 1/2 of the country's ~2 million people live there, and it is very western and non-nomadic (you can get burgers and pizza). In mongolian cyrrilic, it is spelled Улаанбаатар. Ulan Bator is the old spelling. The next biggest cities, like Sainshad or Dalanzadgad are tiny in comparison.
