Or "Ay, Papi"?
Seriously I don't get the whole "sugar daddy" "or who's your daddy" or "oh mommy" sorts of phrases people say to their signifigant others or "friends with benefits". It's gross. I mean I know we hear that people look for characteristics of their mother or father when looking for a mate, but isn't this going a little too far?

I'm talking about calling each other "mommy" and "daddy" when kids aren't involved, but when people are calling each other that in some sexual connotation towards each other.

I have asked this same question, because, like you, I don't get it either.. I understand adults that are married with children referring to their spouse to their children as Mommy or Daddy, but not as an endearment without the child.
I saw a show once where a girl the age of 20 was calling a man of 50 her daddy... because he took care of her every want and need.. and she was considered 'his girl'... to me it seemed more like he was what is considered a sugar daddy, taking care of a girl for sex in return.... I really don't understand why anyone would want to be referred to this way.
But then there are many things about this younger generation I just don't understand!

Excellent question! I certainly wouldn't do it.I agree it's a little creepy. Although in this part of the country I think it's literal.Seems like all the people that have been here for a couple of generations have already tried the whole "mommy/daddy" thing.Hmmm Yuck!

I agree with you 100%! I think it's so creepy! Just sooooo wrong!
The only time I call my husband Daddy is when I say TO MY KIDS something like " go tell Daddy supper is ready". I never understood the who appeal of that "who's your Daddy crap?"!
A guy once said that to me and I answered with my father's name and asked him "why who's your daddy?".

Actually, in the context you refer to, it is not a transference of the person who is the mother or the father. It is about control (which is what sex really is). Mom and dad are power figures - in control. The use of the term connotes the commitment to obedience.

well if you have a baby it helps them to identify you as their parents and how to say mommy and daddy. or maybe there is a serious oedipus and electra complex going on.

I've always wondered that too!
I made a pact with my husband before we were married.
I made him promise me that he would never ever under any circumstances call me "mama". I am not, never was, and never will be his mother!
ick.
