Many people like to lump all Malware as a Virus. He could have a number of other infections a Virus scanner will not detect. Have him go here and run this free online scan and removal. The first link is for the complete scan (virus and spyware) and the second is for spyware only. I recommend doing both.

Possible that AV scanner not working properly/not updated- check latest virus definition dates.

not sure why someone advised adaware as its not a anti-virus program.
but its a great anti-spyware program.
i dont see how this virus is known by your friend if it wasnt picked up unless some strange behavior is happening with there pc.

it may not be a virus,it;s more likley to be spyware,the best 2 free and safe downloads iv'e found are,,spybot search and destroy,,and ad-aware from lavasoft.
