If working properly and cleaned properly they are very safe. If anyone reports a smell, like the other posters, then their woodstove is not functioning properly or isn't cleaned right. My family has always had woodstoves and if they are cleaned regularly and functioning properly they will not stink. Proper cleaning requires you to scoop out the ashes after they built up and get your chimney swept every season by a profssional chimney sweep. Whether buying wood, splitting wood, adding it to the fire is a pain is an opinion only.
It will be much less of a pain if you buy a stove with the largest firebox possible (so you can put more wood at a one time) and the largest door openings possible (so you don't have to split the wood as small to put it in). Myself and many people would agree, the Grizzly brand is the best brand of stove.

I think of major stink in everything in the house and pollution. People talk about car exhausts and cigarette smoking; but these things give you a sore throat in about five minutes of exposure. When I was a kid my old, wooden, elementary school burned down in on a hot Summer day - wood stoves make people's houses smell like the ruins left by fire.

I also do tend to think of the safety issue and feel a little uncomfortable with the idea of wood stoves. I wouldn't have one.

I've got one that came with my current home. It takes up too much space in a smallish home. I wish it wasn't there, but it's too much trouble and expense to get rid of it. I hope it doesn't come to that, but I might actually need it some day.
I'd like to get rid of the dishwasher that came with the home, too. I'd rather have the space for storage.

I think they're pretty safe, but they are smelly and can make your lungs kinda burn. But I don't know about the most recent models.
