I believe you can because the PSP games doens't have region coding. Someone I know has a Japanese PSP, and he was able to play American games on his Japanese PSP.
Here's a paragraph from IGN that shows that PSP games have no region coding:
Today happens to be a pretty good day for Sony fans -- three of those questions were officially answered as part of SCE's announcement of the launch plans (that'd be 19,800 yen [which is about $179-199 in US dollars, and is a good indication for the US price plans], 4-6 hours, and December 12, 2004), and on the fourth question, we finally have confirmation of long-running expectations: the PlayStation Portable will feature a region lock encoding system, but that this lock system will not be used on games.

It should do. Mine worked the other way around. I pre-ordered a UK PSP and got games shipped from the US. They worked fine! So it should work fine, but if not try checking out the official PSP website. The have a good FAQ page and a forum. Theres also alot of conversion software out there now!

Yeah my hubby bought his PSP in the states too and can play games bought from both the UK and US, but UK films do not work on it. If you want to watch films you need to get American ones.

Most games will work and are region free.
However there may be some multiplayer games that might have difficulties communicating between a US version and a UK version (but that's the games and not the machines).
There is however regional coding on UMD movies - so if you wanted the movies on disc - you would need US coded movies.
Of course you can if you own a movie - burn that to a Memory Stick and play it that way - and the file will not be affected by the regional lock out.

PSP games are region free, but Sony are incredibly against importing, and are taking steps to wipe it out completely. Join the revolution, don't let the capitalist pigs keep us down!!!
UMD discs are another matter, as they have a similar region coding to DVDs, so will only run on a PSP from the correct territory. The easiest way around this is to use software (such as PSPVideo 9) to convert your avi files to PSP format, and save them to a memory stick.

japanese movies however still play on a uk psp.

Yes you can. We have an American one and have never had trouble with playing UK games on it, it's just the movies that you can't. If you haven't got a hard case yet, a few places have them on offer at the moment, so would recommend you get one. Happy Playing!
