I do not have a degree in accounting (i have a BA though) and am looking for something to give me an edge and up my income. I have four years experience in accounting/bookkeeping.

In some ways yes, in some ways no. Depending on the business owner they can either look at hiring some one who has NO experience in bookkeeping but has certification, or look at someone that has no certification and 10 years of experience. It's a great bundle to hire someone with experience AND a certificate, and employers would definitaly look at that. It's all up to you and what you want to do to expand your knowledge.

As a business owner, I'd have to say yes. I don't have a degree myself, but I have 13 years in the position; however, if I were hiring a bookkeeper, I would want someone with at least a few college courses in accounting... if they didn't have that, I would certainly think that a certification would be better than nothing, assuming the certification is from some sort of reputable organization.
