I am currently living in the Chicago area working as a sales rep and my wife is a teacher. We have talked about this same question many time. I think from personal experience, teachers make great managers or sales reps. These two careers involve many skills used in the teaching profession, negotiation skills and the ability to read people just to name a few. I have instructed large groups and given many sales presentations and I have had people (including my wife) tell me I would make a great teacher. I also know several people that I work with that have made this type of change and have been very successful!

Many colleges and universities offer career evaluation classes. For example I took a semester course entitled: "A Realistic Approach to Career Evaluation" at Richland college in Richardson, Texas. The format differs, but most seem to have a common thread of 'testing' for aptitude against a broad spectrum of possibilities. The course I completed also included a personality profile as well as an interest evaluation - all of which was data matched and cross referenced to the top ten professions for which I should be ideally suited.
Having been an English major (who later changed to a science major) I have done fairly well as an executive assistant in an academic environment. My salary is low fifties which is better than most classroom teachers here make, the work is extremely rewarding since I am a people pleaser -type person and my contribution in this environment seems to be genuinely appreciated.
I would recommend the academic environment to any degreed professional. It is challenging, fast-paced and mentally stimulating.

No suggestions - I just wanted to thank you for having done this important work for many years. We should reward teachers more than we do in our society. Good luck.
