I don't think it really matters as long as it's kind of thick. If it's too thin, the heaviness of the table could end up scratching the floor through the rug. Also, the chairs moving back and forth (as people sit down and get up) would scratch the floor and move the rug back and forth if it's too thin.

bamboo carpet is very durable and easy to slide the chairs in and out.
