I'd pick Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave)
Yngwie Malmsteen
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Steve Vai
All innovators, in their own unique way!

The late great Tommy Bolin is actually one of my favorites of all time...and he was awesomely beautiful...he played with such groups as The James Gang and Deep Purple...and he put out two solo albums's before he died in 1976 at the age of 26 in fact 30 years ago this month...I had just thought of that...he was an innovator and I loved his voice too.
