Dramatic and sad? Where to start?
"Le Grand Meaulnes" by Alain-Fournier
"The Idiot" by Fyodor Dostoevsky
"Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Brontë
"Hard Times" by Charles Dickens
"Tristan" by Gottfried Von Strassburg
Hope this helps!

One of the greatest drama's about real life that I have read is "The Last Picture Show" by Larry McMurtry. It is so life-like, and it is written from the perspective of an 18 yr old in a small town. Very depressing, sad, but yet, funny and a true comparator to life.

I love Terry Prachett's Discworld books. They are fantasy but they are very well written and always entertaining and amusing. I have read all 30 of them and liked every one.

Toni Morrison is excellent. I like Beloved, Song of Solomon, and Jazz best. Sad and hilarious, moving and heartbreaking.
