Just be confident and know what you know. If you are prepared then there is no reason to be nervous. I confronted this last week when I had to present in front of colleges. Just spit facts. Audiences are usually receptive and ready and willing to hear what you have to say. The only time you can run into trouble is if you begin to ramble. Think fast and talk slow. You'll be fine.

Try to get in the habit of meeting or starting a conversation with at least one new person a week. Also, greeting people in passing may help. Haha, not a loud hello but simple eye contact with nodd and grin. Making eye contact with people will help in overcoming shyness.

Practice speaking infront of a small group, and have the group grow from there until you're comfortable. Practice public speaking in front of your friends. Go to concerts and scream along with the crowd. (This will not embarrass you as your voice will be lost in the group, but it will loosen up your nervousness.) Gradually, practice will dissolve your shyness. ANd try not to think about how many people are in front of you, rather, what you are trying to achieve as a speaker.

i like to sing and karaoke and I used to be very nervous, but what I found out is the more I drank the better I sounded. Also closing your eyes helps. keeping your eyes closed or turning away from the crowd helps sometimes. Or you can try going out in a crowd of friends that are very supportive and that will cheer you on sort of like a personal fan club.

there are a lot of organizations that can help you out with your public speaking (toastmasters is one of them in particular). it depends on how old you are for how readily these organizations will be available to you. also, just doing it a lot will eventually make you feel comfortable with it after a while. i'm giving a speech tomorrow... and i'm already nervous about it.

In time if you expose yourself to this experience, you will become less and less nervous. One good trick, is to practice it in your head. Visualize yourself in the situation, and visualize exactly how you want to feel and have events unfold. Imagine yourself as a giant and visualize yourself mastering the forum. Train your brain to expect success and you will achieve it.

Practice makes perfect! If you are giving a talk - be very comfortable with your subject and do your homework on the topic!
Good luck!

Just smile and be real--it will help to get others to open up to you,so you don't always have to initiate the talking.
