OK, I give this speech a lot, so bear with me.

First of all, just because you major in music, we do NOT brand a treble clef on your forehead so you can never, ever get a job outside of music. I have known dozens, if not hundreds, of music majors in my career, and none of them lives in a cardboard box.

That being said, if you can't make a career as a performer (and very few do) there are still LOTS of ways to make a living related to music. Teaching, publishing, sales, recording, artist management, arts administration, etc. Even if you wind up doing something else entirely, you can enjoy music on the amateur or "semi-pro" level for the rest of your life.

The skills you learn as a musician: teamwork, responsiblilty, dedication, practice, etc. are useful in ANY field, and musicians are often outstanding employees in completely unrelated fields for these very reasons.

Be brave, o musician, be brave!
