Coney Island
In 1895, the first permanent amusement park in North America opened: Sea Lion Park at Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. In 1897, it was joined by Steeplechase Park, the first of three major amusement parks that would open in the area. Often, it is Steeplechase Park that comes to mind when one generically thinks of the heyday of Coney Island. Steeplechase Park was a huge success and by the late 1910s, there were hundreds of amusement parks in operation around the world. The introduction of the world-famous Cyclone roller coaster at Steeplechase Park in 1927 marked the beginning of the roller coaster as one of the most popular attractions for amusement parks as well as the later modern theme parks of today.

Depends on what you're actually referring to...
An amusement park is simply a large park with rides, entertainment, etc.
A theme park has all that but revolves around a particular theme and creates landscaping and architecture to "transport" you to that theme.

Both Knotts Farms and Holiday World (formerly Santa Claus Land) claim to be America's first theme park. They opened in 1968 and 1946 respectively. Walt Disney, however, is usually credited with having originated the concept of the themed amusement park....Disneyland opened in 1955 and actually marketed itself as a theme park, unlike the other two when they first opened (which is why Disney is considered to have originated its concept).

As far as amusement parks are concerned, Coney Island would win that title hands down...they began doing amusement parks in 1895.

it depends on your definition. if you mean amusement park, then probably coney island. if you mean theme park, meaning a park designed around a central theme ala disney or universal, then i'd say holiday world (indiana)which opened as a christmas themed amusement park in 1946

Even though there are older AMUSEMENT parks, KNOTT'S BERRY FARM (Buena Park, California) is supposed to be the oldest THEME park.
