My "check engine" light is on for my 2001 Hyundai. (38000 miles) I already checked the oil, tightened the gas gap, and disconnected and reconnected the battery. What else could it be?

I had the same problem, go to Auto Zone they will check it for free and tell you what the problem is, but most likely it will turn out to be an oxygen sensor, since that is usually what it is on mine, but just to warn you ahead of time, once one of them goes out all the others usually follow in the near future. good luck to you.

My Ford manual says to do all the things you mentioned, plus run out the gas and fill it with premium. If that doesn't work, it's time to go to the dealership. If the car is running fine, it could be the Check Engine light sensor is bad. That happened to me once. Hopefully, that's all it is.

could be almost anything....Hyundai dealership should diagnose it for free....even if you are beyond the 5 year warranty.
