I guess it depends on what you're wearing, but generally I'm not a fan of couples matching their outfits. You can each wear colors that work well together without being too matchy-matchy. Like if your dress is red, he could wear black pants, white shirt and a tie with red accents. I think if your dress is red and his shirt is red, it's a little too much.

a red shirt sounds fine.. just try to go with a burgundy or wine shade. you might wanna pair the shirt with black slacks, like you mentioned and a nice black blazer to match, with a black skinny tie and if you really want to mix it up a bit some black converse (clean ones please!)
