reading is power tell that kid that if he reads he will one day be just like Bill Gates and if he doesn't he'll have the brain and intelligence of George Bush

Look at each individual in your class. They're all different aren't they? If you really want to make them read outside of school. Talk to each one, get on their level, and find out what interests them as far as books go. Adventure? Romance? Science Fiction? History? As I said get on your student's level. They'll thank you for that.

bring the young scholar to the library

find out what he or she likes to read and gets excited about. Make sure they go to that section of the library. Then get out a stack of books on that. Don't question it. If they like romances, then that. If they like hot racy descriptive stories better, then that. Old coins, race cars, Rap music idols, wars, biographies, math books.

whatever it is that week , don't question, encourage and be glad they are reading

Find out what the student is most interested in (science, fiction ect...) In no time they will be interested in reading more. My sister wouldn't read much until I bought her a Goosebump book and now she reads all the time as long as its somrthing she loves.
Good Luck

honestly you cant MAKE anyone read. however if you and the student sit down for 30 minutes everyday because kids learn by what they see and as a parent you need to practice what you preach. good luck and happy reading=)

I found it best to take my daughter to the book store and let her chose what she wants to read. It may not be what I would select but it gets them reading.

you don't think you should FORCE the kid to read, but Introduce him/her to something he/she would actually be intrested in. It works. The kid wants to read less when you force it on him/her.

Extra credit works too.
