I am an (American) employer. I will soon have a full-time employee reach five years of employment. Is five years the norm for increasing vacation to three weeks? What does your employer offer?

This varies from region to region, state to state and totally depends on the employment market at your location.

We have a small manufacturing company and my husband is real old-fashioned. 1 week after 1 year-3 years, 2 weeks from 3-9, and 3 weeks from 10+. Heck, we don't even take 3 weeks of vacation time a year.

5 years of service should warrent 3 weeks vacation. It's a decent reward for commited service.

My company offers 4 weeks from day one for all full time employees. BUT of course, you have to look at the industry, and sometimes the level of positions.

it's all personal preferance and how you want to treat your employee, i've worked at one place that took 7 years for 3 weeks and the place i'm at now is 4 years. If you like your current employee and want to make him happy reward him with the 3 weeks or if you feel it isn't deserved but still want to show you care offer 2 weeks and 3 or 4 days as well. Remember you're the boss so treat your employees how you feel they should be treated or rewarded.

It completely depends on your employer and the package they offer. Many people don't get any.

I earn vacation time per hours worked.
I also earn sick time per hours worked.
That's what was in my contract and I'm happy with it.
