You can do everything yourself ... the local county court should have all the forms available on-line or at the court house ... you'll have to file the forms through the court ( that cost a few hundred here in Cali ) you'll have to run the name change in the local newspaper for so many weeks ( another hundred or so ) ... you'll have a court hearing ... a judgment ... and after all that is done ... you have to change it with Social Sec., DMV, banks ... etc ... but you have to have that court order to prove your name changed ... it's really kind of a pain in the @ss - between paperwork & court hearings ... but it was worth it in the end ... good luck ... !

i had my sons last name changed. i went to the courthouse, got the paperwork. had to file a 'legal' thing in the paper for 4 weeks (ran once a week). then i went to court. if there were any objections by anyone, they could speak. i had none, so i didnt have to say anything and the judge granted it.
the only thing that cost was to run it in the paper..i think $125. make sure you get a couple copies of the order, signed by the judge. you will need them to change ss card, medical, etc...'
by the way, the social security office will NOT change your name until you have the proper legal paperwork.

You have to do this through the courts and you have to over 18 I believe. Costs differ from state to state. Go to your local court house and ask the clerk for the paperwork needed to do a name change. They will have all this information.. cost, time.. steps.. good luck to you.

Many attorney and sometimes a paralegal can file for a name change. Then the court will grant it & you'll have to get all new ID's, SS#, etc. Should cost about $500. That's the cost here in Atlanta anyway.

you have to go to the social security office and request a name change, i think its a few hundred dollars but free if you get married. then you have to go to the DMV and get a new license, once you have the license and social security card you can change all the other bills and stuff.

It sounds complicated. Just keep your name. It is easier.
