Actually they are just different ends of a spectrum of learning abilities. They have more in common in that the learner is not in the norm, learns and retains differently and needs to be educated differently. Think of high intelligence like a superhighway and retardation like a back road. Both will get you to where you are going, but the time and comfort in getting there are different.

It is pretty close with retardation...that's why intellegent people are so lost in the real life.
