Without a doubt the South of Goa. North is full of tourists and is busy and commercial. The south has some much quieter locations - a great antidote when you have been up to margoa or Panjim. My favourite place is Palolem although it has changed a great deal. There were only three or four bars when I first went 10/12 years ago. When I was last there three Christmases ago, there were 160 bars on the beach. but don't let that put you off - it is still quiet. There might be 160 bars but most of them don't have anyone in. There are also lots of places close to Palolem that would be great for a permanent base such as Agonda. Also consider some of the villages away from the beach such as Chandor which has loads of lovely Portugese houses which some families are now starting to sell rather than let them go to ruin.

Try this website, it's a forum for expats and there's a section for Goa.
Good luck!
