Chromosomes are being reduced. Meiosis if the formation of gametes, eggs in females, and sperms in males. When an egg is fertilized, the gamete is restored to its diploid chromosome number, 46 for humans. You get 23 chromosomes from your mother, and 23 from your father. In order for you to receive a full set of chromosomes, meiosis has to occur to half (haploid) your chromosomal number, n=23.
