The DSL cable is connected to the modem, the modem is connected to the hub uplink, in line #1 I have a cat 5 ethernet cable connected to my computer and in line #2 I have a cat 5 ethernet cable connected to her computer. My computer is working fine but her's can not find the connection. Both lines are lit up which means that both lines are working. Please help me figure out how to fix this.

I would try swapping the cat 5 cable on your computer that is plugged into the hub, with the one that your daughter is using. You may have a bad cable. If that doesn't resolve it, try another port on the hub, some hubs disable a port when you use the uplink port. BTW, your daughter's computer is connected to the hub right, because you didn't mention what port hers was plugged into ?

You probably can't use a hub, you need a router. Your ISP is probably only giving you one IP address, so only one computer can be directly connected to the internet at a time, even if you have a hub. With the hub you would need an IP address for every computer wanting to get online.

With a router you can create your own network. With your own network, you only need one IP address because you aren't directly connected to the internet. The router is hooked directly to the internet and the computers connect to the internet through it.

.
If yours is working and hers is not
the problem is probably her pcs NIC driver.

1. To determine the NIC driver manufacturer
look in your Device Manager section.
2. Go to START > RIGHT click MyComputer >
select PROPERTIES >
3. tab for HARDWARE > click button for Device Manager
4. In Device Manager, scroll down to your Network Interface Card device, double click and get the name of the manufacturer.
5. Go online to the manufacturer site > find DRIVERS
6. Download the driver you need.

7. Go to your desktop, find the driver, double click and INSTALL the driver.

8. Restart your computer > it will "see" the new driver and may ask you if you want to use it
instead of the one you have...say YES.

That should solve the problem.

Now you just need to go to control panel > Networking > and run the wizard to set up your home network.
For file sharing you will need to have the same File System, like either FAT or NTFS
on both computers the same
and then you want to map the drives.

For more details, you can go to your Explore HELP
1. Right click START > select EXPLORE >
2. In the Explore window top tool bar click HELP >
3. Select INDEX > and type in Networking

That should give you all you need

Your extra efficient off paying for a router than a change. each computer correct to the change will pull a seperate public IP manage. in the experience that your ISP purely permits you to tug 2 public IP's you have not any room for boom, even if that if there are extra ports on the change. in case you get a router, you'll purely have one public IP, and it will be utilized with the aid of more desirable than one computer. even if that in case you purely plan on having 2 computers, you should nonetheless keep your thoughts open. no longer to point that having your computer immediately uncovered to the outdoors international is a wide safe practices probability, and makes your computer quite susceptible. best of luck. Make sure her TCP/IP propoerties is set like yours ie: Obtain an IP address automatically or if you are using static IP use a differnet one (like one up or down sequentially) from the one you are using.
