The main clause is "I'll give it to her", and (1) the subordinate clause is "when I go to the mall" (expressing time). "If I see Mary" is (2) another subordinate clause (expressing a certain condition).

In the example provided, the first subordinate clause comes before the main clause ("When I see Mary [...] I´ll give it to her"). The normal order--although less emphatic--is "I´ll give it to [Mary] when I see her".

When the normal order of the sentence is inverted, you must insert a comma after the subordinate clause ("When I see Mary, I´ll give it to her"). Note that the two clauses, in their normal order, are not separated by a comma ("I´ll give it to Mary when I see her").

However, the second subordinate clause must be set off by commas because it is a parenthetical expression, that is, it comes in between two clauses: "When I go to the mall, if I see Mary, I will give it to her."

Just a reminder: never place a semicolon after a subordinate clause, as in "*When I go to the mall; if [...]" because, in order to make sense, the subordinate clause--"When I go to the mall"--DEPENDS on the main one ("I'll give it to her.").

When I go to the mall, if I see Mary I will give it to her.

The ; is used to separate full sentences. When I go to the mall is not a full sentence.

When I go to the mall, if I see Mary, I will give it to her.

The comma is used in this case is where you would naturally pause if you were speaking it out loud.

technically, a coma after mall and another after mary. needs to be revamped altogether though. if i see mary when i go to the mall, i will give it to her.

Nola is wrong. KMB is correct. You can only use a semi-colon (;) to connect two independent clauses. Nola used the semi-colon wrong.
