why don't people act as nice healthy hard working people?

Maybe you need to change your surrounding, or even, your demeanor. We tend to attract people who are similar to us in some way....If you feel that the people you're arround are superficial, think about the reasons you were attracted to that type of crowd in the first place.....have you matured? were you just looking to get in where you fit in?

People tend to take the path of least resistance. It's easier to fit in than be an outcast, so people smoke. To stay in, they often have to show disdain for the outcasts. Plus, smoking makes them feel better in the moment at the expense of long term health. Obviously, hard work is more difficult than its alternatives.
