and a mechanic told me he checked the cv boots and joints and tht nothing was wrong with it, that it's probly the hub assembly but couldn't tell at that time whether it was the right or left becaue the sound wasn't distinct enough, the job for one side is estimated at $300, now my question is, if it happens to be a cv boot or joint, how expensive is that or what are the costs?

when does it make the thumping noise, when you are taking off, turning a corner, when you hit a bump, or when you are going straight?
if it iswhen you are taking off, it could be motor mounts, or your brakes are sticking
if it is when you turn, it could be a ball joint, or a CV joint

if it is when you hit a bump, it could be a ball joint, or a shock?strut
and if you are going straight, then check your tires, sometimes a broken belt can make a thumping noise

CV joints make a thumping sound when you turn the corner. Are you turning right? Then it's the right hand CV that is the problem.
Go to an independent mechanic (not Ford Chevy, etc.) and ask them if they agree after a road test... and to get a USED one from a junk yard.
Here in Europe, that's a 40 -50 dollar item. (unless it is a CV plus intermediate shaft, with a bearing in the middle. (100 euro = 133 bucks). WHAT KIND OF CAR DO YOU HAVE? nice to know that?
You will also need an oil change, a differential oil seal, and a new nut on the end of the frontwheel drive shaft.
Start with a used part and it may last forever. My CV joints have gone out at 100,000 miles (160k km). The replacement work is not for an amateur, you need to get under the car, and take off 6 things, and retighten all with TORQUE wrenches (spanners).
Good luck.
PS. the hub assembly IS the CV joint plus a connection of brake disc, shock absorber, torsionbar, lower arm, steering tie rod.

I would definitely get a second opinion. Get a recommendation of a local mechanic who has been in business for a while. One place you might check is Car Talk, a radio show on National Public Radio. they have a website www.cartalk.com and the show airs on Saturdays. by the way, they are not only helpful but really fun to listen to.

I wouldn't worry about that because CV joints and boots don't thump. Find a new mechanic.

CV joints either click or clunk. Outers usually click. Inners clunk.
