well this was something my friend pointed out a while back, and i never found an answer, so if someone knows plz tell me! U can easily see the discoloration on a episode IV when 3PO and R2 land in tatooine!

Its a spare, he obviously lost his leg in some accident, and got a replacement from a silver 3P0 unit.

In the modern movies, he was supposed to be built by a poor Anakin Skywalker (Darth Vader). He could not afford same-colored parts, and probably formed the parts himself. If you mean the original movies, the budget was small, everyone thought it was a stupid idea (save George Lucas), and so the costumes weren't the highest quality available back then, much less now. I don't know how they would have explained a costume defect, but that seems likely.

actually this goes back to the 70's. I dont remember the details totaly but there was something that went wrong. like they ran out of gold legs or something. wouldnt be the first time

remember that he was built by a young Anakin Skywalker with spare parts... so not everything matched perfectly.
