ther is very little cooant in your system. the thermostat controls flow of coolant to the radiator, not the heater core. if the engine is hot and you have no heat, then you have no coolant. therfore there is a leak somewhere.

Forget all these other answers - except the ones that suggest you visit a reputable mechanic. In the winter - a car with a thermostat that is stuck open or does not close for some other reason will allow the engine to run very cool. Look at your car's temperature gauge. is it below the halfway point?
The car's engine will heat the water in it with a open and/or stuck thermostat, but it may not be enough to make the car's heater effective.

A thermostat can be replaced at a reasonable price in most cases. It will depend on the make and model of the vehicle. Most repair shops do this as it's a common repair.

Same thing happened to my 1995. It caused the car to use a lot of gas. Replace the thermostat and that should fix your problem.

If the thermostat is stuck closed you will overheat the engine and not get heat out of heater core.

Sounds to me more like you have no coolant in the radiator. You did check that right? No? Better to that then. Fill it up, (after it's cool of course), now use your eyes to see where it's running out. Got it? Get that hole fixed, refill it with the proper coolant.

Check your radiator fluid level first. You may have a low level which will cause the symptoms you described.
