We had a so-called "3D ultrasound" done on both of our kids... VERY cool. I guess you could call it 4d now as they've improved it enough now to render in real-time as if animated.

The only weird thing is the texturing. Kind of looked like my kid was an angry orange ghost. very spooky.

It was very realistic, though, and did show us what the kid looked like (facially, etc).

I'd wait until the 27th-29th week to do it, though. At that point, the kid has formed completely, but still has a little room in the womb to move around (to get good shots).

I've had a 3D ultrasound done (which is the 4D without the sound) and it wasn't great because the baby was turned with her butt towards the "camera" and didn't want to cooperate at all! When she was turned around her hands were in her face and we didn't get a chance to see any of her facial features. I'm lucky to have a wonderful doctor who has rescheduled my 3D appointment so we can try to get a better look at her without charging me again, but if there's a chance that you'll pay that cost and not get a refund if the baby doesn't cooperate, it could be a huge waste of money. Ask the doctor about the chances of having a re-do without being charged if the baby is turned the wrong way or has hands over his/her face.

I never had one done, but the pictures I've seen from others' 4D scans are pretty cool to see.

However - please do your homework before having a medically unnecessary scan performed. Some negative effects of ultrasounds have been noted, and long-term effects of excessive ultrasounds are still unknown. Here is a great article from Mothering.com on the topic.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I didn't have a 4D, but I did have the 3D done with my 21 month old son & they were well worth every penny!!!! I was able to communicate with him while the process was done & I saw him smile at me!! I also used one of his pictures as my focal point in delivery.

VERY MUCH WORTH THE $$$$$$$$

I've only saw it when done on TV and in the papers and it does look amazing. If you can afford it and want it then go for it. It is a very special time and you only get one opportunity to have it done.

Both my girlfriend and I had them done and we were both REALLY disappointed in the poor quality pictures. If you're going to do it, go to the place and ask to see pics that have been done there. That way, you can see the quality before you spend an arm and a leg!!
