I am a modern day Assyrian, a decedent of the ancient Assyrians. Our land (Mesopotamia) was invaded by Arabs who wished to convert us to Christianity (we were the first group of people to accept Christianity) therefore taking over the country. We have been persecuted for being Christians in the Middle East. This led to a plethora of Assyrians leaving our land (Iraq, Syria, parts of Iran and other Middle Eastern countries) and migrated to the United States. California, Illinois (Chicago), and Michigan (Detroit) are the three top places where Assyrians like myself live. I was born in Chicago, but my parents were born in Iraq. Assyrians live all over the world, in Australia, France, Sweden, Brazil, Germany, Greece, almost any democratic country will have Assyrians living there. Hope I helped!

While the ancient Assyrian Empire was centered in modern Iraq, many Assyrians now live in the United States, and most live outside Iraq. The largest Assyrian population outside of Iraq and Syria is in the United States. I understand that many live in southern California, near Los Angeles, but I do not have a source on that.

The wikipedia site below has numbers of Assyrians in different countries, with what look like legitimate and recent government information sources from various countries.

The Assyrian empire covered much of the middle east at one time. There is a link to a map below.
The Assyrian empire eventually declined, and by 600 B.C. it was overcome by the Babylonians

"Assyria is located in north Mesopotamia and spans four countries: In Syria it extends west to the Euphrates river; in Turkey it extends north to Harran, Edessa, Diyarbakir, and Lake Van; in Iran it extends east to Lake Urmi, and in Iraq it extends to about 100 miles south of Kirkuk"
