Hi,
In Spanish there are multiple meanings for the word "Merced" that came from the Latin "merces, -ēdis" (singular of Mercedes) but the most used now days at least in Mexico are:
- As a title to name someone with some respect, like "Sir" or "My lady"
- To establish that someone or something is depending of another someone or something "He is at her merced, will mean in english He is at her favor"
By other hand, Mercedes in Mexico is a very popular name that means "The one that releases"

rcend is closest to correct. Mercedes was the daughter of Emil Jellinek. He was a consul, businessman car dealer and racer 110 years ago in the south of France. He obtained a special racing model from Daimler, not Benz. He was Jewish so did not have a "Christian name".
Daimler and Benz were separate companies until they merged in the 1920s. In England the Daimler company became separated from the parent company and continued to make cars under it's own name until it was taken over by Jaguar in the 1950s.
Since most of Daimler cars in continental Europe were sold under the name "Mercedes", the merged company, Daimler-Benz sold cars under the name "Mercedes-Benz" .
One of the many meanings of "Mercedes" is something like gift.
Did Hitler know that his favorite brand of car was named after a little Jewish girl?
