I think that no matter what you decide to give these people, they will love because you are thinking of them. It's a lovely thought!
Homemade goodies are always nice to get (especially if you are a good cook!)

Hmmmm, I don't know if I would give something like a rum cake. That is not really a dessert you hear of people eating. Of course, people say it's the thought that counts, but at least "attempt" to stay with things you think a person will really appreciate and like.
A more traditional dessert, like Chocolate chip cookies may be better than that type of cake; in a basket or box with a festive red bow!
You could also consider a nice mug, candy jar, etc from somewhere like BIG LOTS or A DOLLAR STORE. They have quite a few festive, economical items to choose from during this time of year. Just consider ALL your options, before going with the rum cake.
Oh! I guess it is obvious by now that I dont like rum cake LOL so I am speaking from my own taste. : )

Baskets of fruit or different types of cheese and crackers are always good gifts, so they can pick and choose what they would like to eat. Or if you want to bake variety of homemade cookies wrapped really nice are always a good gift. Rum cake is a acquired taste, everyone may not like it.

Rum cake might not be the best thing to give, cookies, candy, even a gift card to a restaurant or even for a grocery store might be more appropiate than that, some people might not like rum cake.

I think they were happy enough with the "thank you" I am sure you gave them with the incidents, but it would be really nice to give them a homemade gift,it shows it is STILL appreciated what they did for your son,and that you are STILL thinking of them. I would like this gift even if it came in a foil throwaway pan you made it in,wouldn't matter if it was wrapped up nice or not,the thought is what counts.

I personally love rum cakes and make them yearly as well. If you have a question as to whether the person is okay with alcohol or not, either give a gift in a jar, a gift certificate or chocolate chip cookies. All seem to go over pretty well. Or an ornament engraved with their name and the year...

I am always leery of taking food from someone I don't really know. Sadly there are some crazy people in the world today. You could make them a goody bag of candies and wrap those up nicely.

I don't know about you, but shopping for people I don't know very well is something I find extremely difficult. I usually go to a store like Wal-Mart and get them a gift card unless I know of a store that they like better. It is easy and they appreciate it. After all, Christmas is about the thought of giving not neccessarily the gift itself. Christmas is too commercialized so therefor we forget what Christmas is really about. At any rate good luck with your search for the perfect gift!!!

That's a very nice idea and they will like it just because you were nice enough to think of them!
